Air duct cleaning

Air duct cleaning means putting the whole supply and return system under negative pressure with a dedicated vacuum, then working loose the construction dust, pet hair, insulation fragments, and stray debris sitting inside the runs with rotating brushes and compressed-air whips. The negative pressure keeps that material moving toward the vacuum instead of getting pushed further down the line or blown back out through a register. It is slower than a shop-vac hose in a couple of registers, and that difference is the whole job.

How negative-pressure duct cleaning actually works

The vacuum connects to the trunk line and pulls the whole system into negative pressure before a single register comes off, which is what keeps loosened material moving toward the collection unit instead of drifting back into a room. We work the branches with rotary brushes and air whips, one run at a time, and send a small camera ahead of the brush on runs we cannot otherwise see, so what is actually inside the duct decides the job.

What actually comes out of a duct system

Most of what the vacuum collects is ordinary: construction dust from drywall and flooring work, pet hair and dander pulled in through returns, and whatever settled on the ductwork before it was sealed up. In older housing stock across Hunterdon and Somerset County we also see loose fiberglass insulation shedding into the airstream. None of it means the system was installed wrong — it means nobody has opened it up to look.

We pull every supply and return grille, clean the boot behind it by hand, and put it back on dry, rather than treating the registers nearest the mechanical room as a stand-in for the whole house.

When it is not worth doing

Here is the part most companies leave out: duct cleaning will not fix a run that is disconnected, crushed, or leaking into a crawlspace, and it will not settle a complaint that has nothing to do with the ductwork. If a technician finds a run that has come apart, that is a repair, and we say so rather than bill a cleaning for a problem it cannot solve. If the system was cleaned within the last year or two and nothing has changed, the honest answer is usually to wait.
