Bloomfield, Collingswood Borough and Haddonfield Borough grew up along early trolley lines, and in Collingswood and Haddonfield close to half the housing predates 1940: real masonry chimneys, sometimes carrying more than one flue in a single stack.

Newark, Irvington, East Orange, Flemington Borough, Passaic and Paterson carry the region’s densest multi-unit housing (in Flemington Borough alone, close to 57 percent of homes sit in buildings with more than one unit), which puts party-wall flues and shared duct runs ahead of a single-family fireplace.

Manville, New Brunswick, Plainfield, Edison, Parsippany, Clifton, Fair Lawn, Pennsauken Township and Cherry Hill Township built out fastest between the 1940s and the 1980s: in Manville, nearly 43 percent of the housing dates from a single 20-year window after the war, short flues sitting over basement-installed furnaces.
